Cardiovascular Engineering

We define cardiovascular engineering as an interdisciplinary field that merges engineering sciences, medicine and biology to address challenges within the cardiovascular system.

Congenital Heart Defects

Diseases that encompasses structural abnormalities present at birth, altering normal blood flow within the heart. These conditions arise from anomalies in heart development during fetal growth. Our 3D modeling can help visualize the defects and plan surgical interventions.

Patent Ductus Arteriosus

One of the most common types of CHDs, PDA occurs when the ductus arteriosus fails to close properly after birth, causing oxygen rich blood to mix with oxygen poor blood from the pulmonary arteries. There are three main types based on size:
1.Large PDA, which can lead to heart failure with symptoms like rapid breathing and poor weight gain.

2.Moderate PDA, causing heart enlargement and complications.

3.Small PDA, often asymptomatic but carrying the risk of endocarditis.

At VitroMech, we support healthcare professionals in treating Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) cases by offering advanced solutions. Our approach involves creating precise 3D models of the patient's aorta to enhance visualization. Furthermore, we employ sophisticated simulation techniques to replicate the patient's blood flow dynamics within the PDA and aortic regions. Our comprehensive services for PDA encompass surgical planning, which includes options such as PDA closure with tailored shunt insertion based on aorta size or maintaining PDA patency. These options are thoroughly analyzed and optimized through our simulation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) services, ensuring the most effective treatment strategy for each patient.

Aortic Stenosis

Aortic stenosis is a condition characterized by narrowing of the aortic valve, which obstructs blood flow from the heart's left ventricle to the aorta. This obstruction can lead to increased pressure within the left ventricle and reduced blood flow to the body. Aortic stenosis can be mild, moderate, or severe, and it may require medical management or surgical intervention depending on its severity. With Vitromech’s patient-specific 3D modelling it will be possible the visualization of aortic valve anatomy for better surgical planning, while CFD will predict blood flow through the narrowed valve, aiding in prosthetic valve selection and surgical outcome optimization.

Blood Vessel Defects

Congenital heart defects can also affect the blood vessels, such as the aorta or pulmonary arteries. For example, conditions like coarctation of the aorta involve a narrowing of the aorta, which can restrict blood flow to the lower body. Similarly, anomalies in the pulmonary arteries can impact blood flow to the lungs. Treatment typically involves surgical correction to alleviate the obstruction and restore normal blood flow. Vitromech’s patient-specific 3D modelling protocol depict vessel anatomy affected by conditions like coarctation of the aorta, aiding precise surgical planning, while FEA and CFD assist in predictions of post-surgical blood flow changes to assess treatment efficacy and long-term outcomes.

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS)

HLHS is a complex CHD where the left side of the heart, including the left ventricle, aorta, and mitral valve, is underdeveloped. This condition significantly impairs the heart's ability to pump oxygen-rich blood to the body. Treatment typically involves a series of surgical interventions, such as the Norwood procedure, to reroute blood flow and improve circulation.

At Vitromech, through segmentation we aid in understanding complex cardiac anatomy, guiding staged surgical procedures, while our simulations hemodynamics assessment allows you to optimize surgical approaches and reduce intra- and post-operative complications.

Glenn Procedure

The Glenn procedure, named after surgeon William Glenn, i is a surgical intervention commonly used in the treatment of certain congenital heart defects (hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), tricuspid atresia, and double outlet right ventricle). This procedure involves establishing a direct conduit between the superior vena cava and the pulmonary artery. By diverting blood flow away from the right ventricle, it alleviates cardiac workload and enhances systemic oxygenation.

Enhancing the Glenn procedure with our tailored approach, integrating patient-specific shunts and advanced 3D modeling, ensures precise planning for optimized outcomes. Our virtual simulations enable risk-free practice, refine techniques, boosting precision and efficiency. With customized patient-specific shunts, meticulously designed within our 3D models, we guarantee an optimal fit and function, minimizing complications and maximizing patient contentment.

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a cardiovascular condition characterized by the narrowing or blockage of coronary arteries due to atherosclerosis. This leads to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle, resulting in symptoms such as angina or myocardial infarction. Treatment involves lifestyle modifications, medication, and interventions such as angioplasty or coronary artery bypass grafting to alleviate symptoms and reduce the risk of complications.

By simulating blood flow through coronary arteries, 3D models can help in the identification of areas of stenosis (narrowing) or blockages, guiding decisions regarding interventions such as angioplasty or bypass surgery.
